大多數中國人學英文的過程都有一種「磨難」之感。也許有極少數的人自幼即得天獨厚，沒有感受到背生字、記文法、苦練發音等等是一樁苦事，相信那絕對是少數。
我沒有研究過別的國家的年輕人在學外國語文時會不會跟我們學英文一樣苦，但是我認識幾位元必須修拉丁文的英國同學，其苦況和我在大學讀楚辭和尚書時的感受非常之相像－文字既看不懂；內容也很陌生。若從這個角度來看問題，凡學一種外國語文，首先必須看清它的應用層面有二：

Fresher's Week at universities can be a nerve-wracking experience
The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all, it can be overwhelming and sometimes confusing.
October is usually the busiest month in the academic calendar. Universities have something called Freshers' Week for their newcomers. It's a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.

Barack Obama made his victory speech in Chicago
After a hard-fought campaign, Democratic Senator Barack Obama has won the US presidential election, and will become the 44th President of the United States – the first African-American in the country’s history to do so.

西曆一年有12個月，但不少人並不知道12 個月的英語名稱的來歷。西曆起源于古羅馬曆法。羅馬的英語原來只有10 個月，古羅馬皇帝決定增加兩個月放在年尾，後來朱裏斯*凱撒大帝把這兩個月移到年初，成為1月.2月，原來的1月.2月便成了3月.4月，依次類推。這就是今天世界沿用的西曆。
